Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode is the full conversational AI search experience inside Google Search — an evolution of AI Overviews into a multi-turn chat interface that lets users follow up on complex questions.
Why it matters
AI Mode represents Google's most aggressive answer-engine positioning yet — it doesn't surface ten links and let the user pick, it answers conversationally and may never show traditional results. For brands, this collapses the funnel further than AI Overviews already do.
What it is
Google AI Mode is a conversational interface inside Google Search, powered by Gemini, that goes further than AI Overviews: it accepts complex multi-step queries, supports follow-up questions in the same session, and synthesises responses across multiple sources without necessarily showing the ten classical blue links underneath.
How it differs from AI Overviews
- Single-turn vs multi-turn — AI Overviews answer one query; AI Mode supports a back-and-forth conversation in the same Search session.
- Optional vs explicit — AI Overviews appear automatically when triggered; AI Mode is a deliberate user choice (a separate tab or button in Search).
- Reasoning depth — AI Mode can run more involved reasoning chains, comparable to Gemini Pro / 2.5 Deep Research in chat.
Why it matters for brands
AI Mode further reduces the chance a Google session ends in a click to your site. If the customer's full research happens inside an AI Mode conversation, your brand either appears in the synthesis or doesn't — and there's no ranked-results consolation prize.
Measurement
Because AI Mode is a separate Search surface from classical Google, AEO platforms should measure it as its own engine, not roll it into Gemini or AI Overviews tracking. The same brand often has different share-of-voice numbers across all three Google AI surfaces.
