AI Overviews
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer summaries that appear above the traditional list of search results, launched broadly in May 2024 and rolled out across most query types since.
Why it matters
AI Overviews are the largest single shift in Google's results page in two decades. Pew Research found users click traditional results just 8% of the time when an AI Overview appears, vs 15% without one — meaning even ranking page-one no longer guarantees the click.
How they work
When Google detects a query suited to a synthesised answer, it generates an AI Overview using Gemini, draws from indexed pages, and renders it at the top of the results page. The Overview includes inline source links — but most users never click them.
Prevalence
Semrush analysis of 10 million keywords found AI Overviews appeared in roughly 13–25% of US queries through 2025, varying by intent type. Informational queries trigger them most often; commercial and transactional queries trigger them less but the share is growing.
Click-through impact
The Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 queries in March 2025: users clicked traditional results in 8% of searches with an AI Overview vs 15% without one. Similarweb found zero-click rates around 83% on AI-Overview-bearing queries.
What to optimise for
Two things: appearing in the AI Overview's cited sources (so the AI quotes you), and being mentioned by name in the synthesis itself (so the answer credits your brand even if no click happens).
